We’re looking for trustees to join our board

The term of our current board of trustees will wrap up at the next AGM, which will take place at 5.30pm on Tuesday 11th February 2025. As well as recapping on the last two years, we’ll also be inviting our members to vote in trustees to the board.

The British Sauna Society is at a pivotal stage in its growth, maturing from an enthusiast’s club into an established national organisation that can support the fast-growing UK sauna industry. So we need, more than ever, enthusiastic and hard-working individuals with the right skills to lend their hand to a growing charity with big aspirations.

The Role.

Position: Trustee of the British Sauna Society

Location: Online + occasional in-person (UK-wide)

Time Commitment: Approximately 16 hours per quarter, including attendance at board meetings, preparation, and additional commitments as required.

Term: 2 Years, to a maximum of 3 terms (6 years)

Who We Are.

The British Sauna Society is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes and develops sauna culture to make its physical, mental and social health benefits accessible to more people across the United Kingdom.

Our Aims.

  • Educate and engage with the public about global bathing arts, cultures and heritage, including that of the British Isles.

  • Support an industry of sauna practitioners and make the career relevant and accessible to diverse demographics.

  • Publicise scientific research regarding thermal bathing to local authorities, public health bodies and UK-wide communities

  • Encourage and support UK-based research into the health impact of regular sauna practice.

  • Encourage and support local authorities and health providers to recognise and promote the health and community benefits of sauna bathing within their own regions and health programmes.

  • Promote and set standards on sauna usage and operation. Encouraging excellence in designing, building and guiding of sauna experiences to ensure that benefits are delivered effectively and safely.

Role Overview.

As a trustee, you will be part of a fast growing and well regarded organisation that has been developing from a grassroots level for the past 10 years and is currently finalising charitable status.

At this exciting juncture, the trustee board will be instrumental in making the right decisions to ensure the organisation develops effective functioning and meets the objects and aims of its constitution.

The board will oversee the strategic direction, governance and development of the operational team, ensuring that the organisation is fulfilling its objectives and providing value to its members.

Trustees collectively hold ultimate responsibility for the operations of the BSS, safeguarding its assets and reputation and are accountable to the charity commission.

Individual qualities and skills.

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive board that reflects the communities we serve and brings a wide range of perspectives to our work. We warmly welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, particularly those who are normally underrepresented in governance roles.

We are particularly looking to recruit the following skills to the British Sauna Society board:

Finance.

Able to contribute to scrutiny of financial information, understand accounts and budgets.

Governance.

Understanding of legal duties of trustees and best practice in governance, working with local authorities, policy making.

Leadership.

Leadership roles, growing or advising organisations.

People.

Experience of developing a positive organisational culture.

Strategy.

Developing, delivering and monitoring the strategy of an organisation.

Operational.

Working within the voluntary sector or with small charities.

Marketing and fundraising.

Data & analytics, marketing campaigns, direct fundraising, grant fundraising.

Lived experience.

Experience as a service user (or close connection to a service user, eg. carer).

Other networks.

Connections to individuals or organisations that can enable to BSS to achieve its aims, for example in local government, the creative arts, health care or academia.
